Great Wedding photography venues – Daylesford and surrounding towns

This week I took a drive up to Daylesford and the surrounding towns of Kyneton, Woodend and Trentham. What a gorgeous area! It’s so great to be able to leave the city for the day, slow down and breath in some fresh, crisp country air. This whole area, which is 45 minutes to 90 minutes out of Melbourne is a fantastic place for a country Wedding – The scenery is beautiful with so many opportunities for amazing photography and the people are so friendly. Wondering in to the venues that I visited I was always greeted by a warm, genuinely friendly face.

One of the huge pluses for the Hepburn springs area is it’s beauty is present all year round – lush greenery and beautiful flora from spring thru summer, the incredible reds, orange and yellows of Autumn as the leaves change and the fairytale-like snow covering of winter.

Over the next week or two I’ll post some photography from some of Daylesford and Woodend’s amazing wedding venues such as Campaspe House, Daylesford convent, the lake house Daylesford and Sault.

Autumn colours, New York City

New York City has a lot of names, many of those it lives up to, but there is certainly one – “the concrete jungle” I don’t think it does.

While there’s no doubting there is plenty of Concrete through out New York city, there’s no shortage of green spaces – parks of all sizes from a vacated single block community garden to Central park.

These are some photos I took one Autumn (fall) day just basking in the sun, admiring the colours :)

Cherry Blossoms Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Mid May brings about an end to the Cherry Blossom season in the Northern Hemisphere.

Having lived directly opposite the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for more than a year, I can say their Cherry Blossom festival is definitely one of the best times to visit, they have the largest variety of Cherry blossoms outside of Japan!

My early morning visits to the BBG were a visual feast that have inspired me to get back to Japan and visit during this amazing time of year.

Here are a couple of photos I just found from way back during the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens 2010 Cherry blossom festival.

Just to close on a wedding specific note – I highly recommend the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens to anyone thinking about a Garden Wedding in New York – it is such a beautiful place.

Crossing the Manhattan Bridge

I just found a few folders of images taken from New York just before we left to come home. In the madness of packing up our lives, resettling and getting back in to the Wedding photography season here in Melbourne I hadn’t found the time to go through them.

Here are a couple of photos from an afternoon/evening walk across the Manhattan Bridge. It seems kinda fitting that it took me until the last couple of weeks of our 2 years in New York to actually walk across the Manhattan bridge from BUMBO to Chinatown. The Manhattan Bridge is mainly neglected by the hoards of tourists coming through New York, who never fail to visit the Brooklyn bridge. Even the foot and bike traffic of Brooklynite’s heading to and from work on a daily basis is lower than on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Despite all this, I still think the scenes and views from the Manhattan Bridge are pretty amazing!

Oh, and don’t forget, even though we are back living in Melbourne, I’m still available to photograph weddings in Manhattan, Brooklyn and all through out New York :)

Hit me up with an email to discuss.

I’m an (eco) sensitive boy

Since coming back to Melbourne my Wedding photography has been evolving with new branding and the new site.

Today I’m psyced after a visit to the printers to pick up my new business cards. I’m wrapped with the results, but more excited by the fact that the cards are eco friendly – printed on 100% post consumer recycled paper with veggie based inks.

This is the first small step in making my photography business more environmentally friendly. I’m really excited to build on this and make my business as sustainable as possible in an attempt to reduce in any small way my impact on the environment.

Currently, I’m in the process of researching environmentally friendly Wedding Albums to offer all my clients who see this as an important issue and would like to do their bit in protecting our resources and the planet.

If any of you have other ideas on how I could become a more eco friendly wedding photographer I’d appreciate your input

Here’s a quick shot of the new cards, if you want to get your little hands on one we’ll just have to meet up for a coffee :)

New Galleries of Personal work coming your way!

Well, the Wedding season is on the wind down and things are becoming less hectic around here which has given me a chance to add a new gallery section to my website with some person work I’ve shot while travelling. The gallery will start off small but grow as I get through the archives of stuff that I’ve enjoyed shooting over the last few years.

I’d love for you to take a look through, and keep coming back as the galleries grow. It’s another chance for me to show the creativity and passion that I have for photography no matter what the situation.

Here’s a photo I came across while sorting through the archives.

I’m not sure exactly where this photo was taken. It’s shot from the back of a Jeep while we were driving through the Thar Desert visiting communities out side Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India. We’d been driving along this unsealed road for about half an hour or so when we pasted this man and his flock. The little flicker of colour was such a great contrast to the dry muted tones of the desert that we had been racing past for so long.

Wedding destination – Portarlington, Vic

Just an hour and a half from Melbourne and only 30 minutes from Geelong – Portarlington is a small beach town, a perfect place for a coastal, minimal fuss Wedding. Part of the Bellarine Peninsula, which is known for it’s wineries and fine food, Portarlington doesn’t disappoint. There are a few wineries in the area that host Weddings – Bellarine Estate, Jack Ribbit Vineyard and McAdams Lane Terinda which offer beautiful views across green paddocks, grape vines (obviously) and Corio Bay.

Portarlington and all of the Bellarine peninsula is only 90 minutes from Melbourne which isn’t a long journey in the car but  just long enough for your guests to know that they have left the big smoke – why not make a weekend out of it, sit back and read a book, visit a few wineries, play some golf, have a surf or just explore the coastal towns. The salty sea air will do everyone good!

Chris + Laura’s Wedding photography

Happy Wednesday all! I came across this photo from St Mary’s Anglican Church in North Caulfield during Chris + Laura’s Wedding Ceremony. It’s a beautiful church inside and out.

photography from Steve + Sue’s surprise garden Wedding

I had a great time photographing Steve and Sue’s Wedding. When Steve first told me about their surprise garden Wedding I was quite excited for them. It’s certainly a little different, perhaps even a bit of a gamble – you have to trust that when you tell your friends and family that they need to be at a particular place at a certain time that they will show up.

Steve + Sue had a pretty good cover story – they had recently bought a new house, had been living in it for a few months and were ready for a house warming. In an effort to get all their guests to the wedding ceremony on time they had planned a tree planting ceremony to help comemmorate a new chapter in their lives. My cover story, on the other hand was a little more doubtful – I had to pretend to be a friend of Steve’s from work who had offered to take a few photos of friends and family as a favour. The problem was I really didn’t know anything about the particular’s of Steve’s job, so any questions of how I knew Steve and Sue were answered briefly and the subject of conversation was quickly changed.

The whole day was a great success (and I didn’t blow my cover), almost all their guests arrived in time for the ceremony, in fact they probably had a higher percentage of guests arriving on time than many other couples when their guests do know it’s a wedding ;)

It was Sue’s Sister, who had the honor of revealing to the guests that what they were present for was actually a Wedding. The reactions that followed as Steve and Sue appeared at the back of the crowd after a quick change into more formal attire were ones of absolute joy and surprise.

The Wedding ceremony was in the front garden of their new home under a pretty, old tree. Melbourne’s dodgy Autumn weather was kind to us on the day with patches of sunshine and cloudiness through out and very little rain. The ceremony was delivered beautifully and personally and included Steve + Sue’s two boys Isaac and Lev.

After the ceremony the day continued with the relaxed, no-fuss vibe that Steve + Sue had wanted – a big BBQ with great food and great friends.

Congratulations Steve and Sue and thanks for letting me be a part of your day!

Photography from Chris + Laura’s Melbourne Wedding

So, I’ve finally had a chance to blog a few photographs from Chris + Laura’s Melbourne Wedding. It was a beautiful day and Melbourne actually managed to put on a warm, sunny day. C + L ‘s Wedding was a pretty relaxed day full of family and friends, including some of Chris’s family who made it over from Christchurch, New Zealand.

The ceremony was at St Mary’s Anglican Church with the reception just down the road at the wonderful Sails on the Bay in Elwood.
